It is alaways good to go to a doctor for a regular checkup. The doctor can run tests and tell you what you need to do in order to get healthier and to stay healthy. That doctor can do lab work that detects malign conditions that can be treated before you even know you have them!
So, let's look under the hood of our North American Generation Alpha students (those born between 2010 and two seconds ago). We will use a recent survey of 422 Canadian Gen A youth (you can access the full report by clicking --> here <--)
Non-Christians demonstrate a noticeable hesitancy about coming to church. Even if invited by a friend, the majority say they are unsure or would not attend. This uncertainty may suggest the need for non-traditional forms of evangelism such as digital or service-oriented outreach.
In contrast, Nominal Christian preteens who report not being church attenders show
an overwhelming openness to coming to church if invited; 3 in 4 of these young people
say they would come. It is encouraging to see that sometimes just reaching out with an
invitation can make all the difference.
Nominal Christians (the term used above) are those who coniser themselves Christian in name only. They do not go to church, read their Bible, pray, or fellowship with belivers. In other words, they have all the markers of a harvest that is ripe for true salvation and discipleship. They just need a "field-worker" to invite them to church. Of all the youth surveyed who considered themselves to be Christian, 73% were Nominal, while the other 27% are "Emerging Committed Christians."
The point is this, and it is a timeless truth that is not unique to Gen A, it is not unique to Canada, it is something that has been true from the advent of the Church Age in the book of Acts:
People come to church if they are invited.
There, I said it! (Whew!) How many nominal Christians do you think live in our neighborhood, stuck in their homes, waiting for an invitation from a church and a church member they know and trust?
Why do we host InterServe in our building? So that we may make relationships and invite people to follow Jesus.
Why do we hand out thousands of No Hunger Summer sack lunches in the summer? So that we may make relationships and invite people to follow Jesus.
Why do we deliver needed items to families in crisis through CarePortal? So that we may make relationships and invite people to follow Jesus.
Why are we hanging out with our neighborhood high school families? So that we may make relationships and invite people to follow Jesus.
The personal touch, the person care, the personal invitation. It is a timeless and cultureless means. Share the gospel, out loud and in person.
