English Scripture that Tyndale lived, died to translate turning 500 years old

“If God spare my life ere many years, I will cause a boy that driveth the plough, shall know more of the Scripture than thou dost.”

Can you imagine a world where you did not have a Bible in your own language?  You don't have to go back that far in human history to find that! 500 years ago, William Tyndale struggled against the powerful forces of the age to translate the New Testament into  everyday language, so that English-speakers can read Scripture for themselves.

Prior to that, the church and government had successfully canalized the language of the printed Word of God to Latin (the "Vulgate") only. Only clergy could read Latin - therefore faith by laypeople was entirely at the mercy of the church leadership. If faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God, then access to those very words are of paramount importance.

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. - Romans 10:17
