None of us want to die. However, Jesus did. Then he rose. If we are to be transformed to be in his image, there are three distinct ways in which we should die to ourselves so that God may be glorified in our new life. This fits with the theme of "surrender" that we have seen in the past two Sunday services.
"Fallen man is not simply an imperfect creature who needs improvement: he is a rebel who must lay down his arms. Laying down your arms, surrendering, saying you are sorry, realizing that you have been on the wrong track and getting ready to start life over again from the ground floor—that is the only way out of a “hole.” This process of surrender—this movement full speed astern—is what Christians call repentance. Now repentance is no fun at all. It is something much harder than merely eating humble pie. It means unlearning all the self-conceit and self-will that we have been training ourselves into for thousands of years. It means undergoing a kind of death."

The three ways are:
(1) by killing personal sin.
"In short, the best way to kill sin is to die to ourselves a little every day. Christians are those who recognize that death still infects our bodies and even seeks to gain mastery over them. To kill death, we must bring sin into the light."
(2) by fasting as a means of denying ourselves.
“The devil sits at the summit of the comfortable life.”
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Romans 12:1
(3) by giving it to the poor.
"In generosity to the poor, we take a small part of us that can easily control us—our money—and put it to death. We make it die by releasing its death grip on us. We take the life that God has given us and identify with the poor—thus sharing the life God has given us."
